Default home port job on heads?

is this even worth doing? my cars gonna be down for a week of so and i was wondering if its even worth my time to take the heads off and try to smooth them out a little bit, having never done anything like this before.

I think so. I just did mine since I had to take the heads off anyway. I don't have any experiance, but I got some tips from a pro. We'll see how they do when I get it put back together.

Yes, just look up "home head porting" here and see what to do. just a couple of things that might up the flow alittle, not like aftermarket heads but if you don't go crazy and screw them up it won't hurt and can only help. Just do the research and try it. Also check out the articles on compression ratios and quench, get mr gaskets head gaskets to lower quench. There are alot of smart guys on here that know the ls1 very well, just take your time and do the research and you should have a great turnout.

Is there an "ideal" way to do home head porting? Like with special equipment like a mill or something?

just do a search on home head porting and read all those articales that deal with the subject. There are a few really good threads.
