Default Your thoughts on Ported vs regular LS6 oil pump

Please excuse my ignorance..

I think the ported ones might also be shimmed, but is there really any "functional" difference between a ported one & a regular one?

thanks..

the casting isnt that smooth around the inlet and outlet.

take it apart, clean up thoes areas, and theres less restriction... therefore it can flow more easily.

but, as a positive displacement pump, no.
it will not change the volume of oil pumped. it will only change the amount of effort required to pump that volume.

the ONLY way to increase the amount of oil pumped, is to increase the amount of fluid it displaces. inotherwords, make the pump bigger.

the pump at mid and upper RPM pumps more oil then the engine can use (like all automotive oil pumps)
to keep the pressure from going sky-high at high RPMs, a bypass valve is used.
whenever the oil pressure exceeds the pressure of the spring, the bypass opens and the oil pumps back into the pan. this is why, at really low idle, you see low PSI, but once it hits the max PSI, the gauge stays there.

by shimming the spring, you make the oil pressure higher before it opens the bypass. giving the ignorant the feeling of "ooh, i have more oil pressure, and thats good"

in reality, it has no helpful effect, other then making the pump work harder and use more power. the only helpful thing you could really do would be to increase the volume... and id only reccomend that if needed... for example, if you had a turbo, displacement on demand, or some other oil using device..

in a nutshell:

same volume of fluid
porting makes it easier to pump - freeing power
shimming is just for show - costs a little power.

There are plenty of sposors to the right that sell them at great prices and the stock one is not good enough. Like previously stated, don't skimp. If your doing a cam swap there's no point in not putting one in. You'll feel better knowing it's in there too. I know I do.

you mean a stock GM part? thru GM... SDPC is a sponcer and can help you, or if you have the part number you can go thru GMpartsDirect.com..... athough SDPC usually has identical prices once you add in GMPD's "shipping"

If you want the best here it is!

The QTP oil pump provides more volume of oil at a higher pressure relief setting. The pump is designed with a gerotor designed to displace more than 15% more oil than the original GM design. A 2mm thicker gear rotor compared to the factory rotor. The relief spring installed in the pump is designed to increase the internal by-pass pressure setting an additional 10 psi. An additional spring is supplied which will reduce the internal by-pass pressure back to original settings. The pump design has also been improved by reducing flow restriction. In addition, pump materials have been changed to improve performance and durability. These changes improve the pump’s efficiency resulting in better performance especially during priming and at low rpm.

This works with our 2 piece timing cover. Any questions call us.

I love the quick change cover but hate the price!

OT. I dont think there is anything wrong with the stock pump, be it Ls1 or Ls6. I imagine there are ppl that are going to chime in and say it stupid or whatever and thats fine. Bbut my stock pump hasnt been touched yet, and I have swapped out cams twice already. Closest I have got to the pump is lifting the chain off during install of cam timing sprocket! Good oil pressure, good flow and no issues. JMPO.

Extra flow can cause lower sump oil levels at higher rpm, but if flow disruption causes aeration of oil than ported pump can pay off big time in keeping bearings lubricated, and lifters fully pumped up for max power. I like idea of ported oil pump, stock pressure.

YO-EL,I'd stick with the LS6 pump and not worry about anything....

My buddy Walt makes a 2 piece timing cover for $275 which will be nice idea down the road,u wont have to pull the rack if u decide to change the cam out again.Nasty Performance sells it as does my buddy breadmanwalt@aol.com....

A ported pump cannot pump any more oil, only pump a given flow rate with less pressure. Unless you are talking about a bigger pump then the sump level should not change.

so if you got low oil pressure putting in a ported pump won't increase the oil pressure/ oil flow. also anyone out there got any exp with the slp ported ls6 oil pumps.

i bought a stock ls6 pump from a member on this board, and ported THE HELL out of it. not just the openings, but ported some of the material out of the entire casting on the inside. i am in the process of cleaning it up right now, but i REALLY opened up the two intlets/outlets. only paid $45 for mine.
