Default Yet another ARP Cank Bolt thread

OK, I searched the archives and I think I am more confused now, than I was before

1. With a Lunati Crank and ARP Crank bolt, would I need to replace the crank bolt if I have to pull the pulley off for any reason? $26 vs $3 gets expensive if this needs to be done often.

2. Everyone recommends using a longer crank bolt to install the pulley, is teh ARP crank bolt longer? And is this the only one that is longer?

Thanks much,

David

The arp bolt is reusable.
The longer bolt should live in your toolbox for use only during the re-install.

And no the arp bolt is not longer. Get a longer bolt from the hardware store.

the longer bolt is so that you engage enough threads to start to press the pully on.

once the pulley is most of the way on, remove the longer bolt, and finish up with the ARP bolt.

the ARP bolt is reuseable.
the pulley install bolt is reuseable, as a tool.

Thanks guys. That what I was thinking but I just wanted to clearify.

So, according to the parts manual, the stock crank bolt is an M16x2x103.
How much longer are we talking? and inch (~25mm) or more?

Thanks again,
David

Just make you one of these about 6" long (all thread). If you can't make one PM me & I'll hook you up. This is the safest way in my opinion.

Where the heck did you find metric rod stock? If I cant find a 6" (150mm) or longer bolt at the local bolt shop this weekend, then I will give you a PM.

THanks,
David

That is the right way to install a balancer. It puts let's wear on the crank threads.

You can get it at NAPA (special order) in 3' long sections, it's kind of spendy. This is what I did & cut it up.

Just be real careful not to bottom out any longer than stock bolt you get, I think that is why people get the bolt stuck in the crank.

Napa carries the longer bolts with the correct thread pitch.

the other bolt is longer.

if you use the longer bolt, and try to get it on all the way with it, the bolt bottoms out in the crank.

if you turn it hard, it jams in there, and is a royal pain to remove.

so you just need to use the longer bolt until you're ready to use the new GM bolt.

athough id just buy/make the allthread install tool... i just ordered one from someone on here..
