Default Urgent motor help needed

Hi all: I have been following along on the forum for a while can some one help out a fellow motorhead. This is a not a genIII question this is a 3.1 6 cyl question here goes. A piston let go on my 97 monte carlo and I am trying to fix it as cheap as possible. I can get a 91 Corsica with a 3.1 for 100 bucks that had rear end damage. External and internal is the block the same will all my sensors and accessories bolt up. Are the heads, compression ratio the same? I think the new car has a different cam? I could just swap out my cam in to the 91 engine if need be. The car allways ran good but had a cold engine piston knock. After 137K I guess it was time. If anyone can help me out please post up or send me an email? Thanks

I don't know these engines very well, but the earlier engines are called 3.1L and the later are called 3100. There is another version that came later called the 3100, Series II. Although the basic engine design is the same as the old Chevy 2.8L that goes back to the early 80's, there are a few differences on the 3100 and Series II versions, mainly the front cover and intake are different. I think the 3100 also relocated the water pump and oil pump. I'm guessing the 1991 is a 3.1, while your 1997 is a 3100 (maybe even a Series II).

I'm guessing the earlier engine will bolt up to the trans., but you may have to do a lot of parts swapping, and accessories may also be a problem. Remember, I'm just guessing. Hopefully someone knows these engines better than I do.

I'll admit I quit reading after that part.

ahh my gf's 96 corsica has the infamous cold engine noise. From what I remember reading the noise was most likely loose wrist pins.

Bummer. I didn't think you could hurt those engines. I put 185K miles on a 2.8L and 194K on a 3.1L. The 3.1L still ran like a champ when I traded it in on a new 96 'camaro.
Sorry, can't help with the swaps, though.
