You can still do it but it's a ton harder to compress a regular spring compared to a "pusher" spring. The pusher spring has a really soft rate so you can have enough pressure to hold the valve up but make it easy enough to compress it down by hand and check your p to v clearance.

The problem is with the lifters not pumped up you won't get the most accurate reading. You could still hit your piston if you have a very slim clearence checking like this.

Sorry, Clay was what I was talking about.
It's the most time consuming but will give an acurate clearance...

Exactly!

I tried saying earlier that there is kit to use for measuring PTV if you don't want to pull your heads off to clay.

We have been through this before, make sure you have an adjustable rocker arm or push rod when you do this.

If you use the stock lifter/ with a soft spring and the stock pushrod and rocker arm, what would normally become lifter preload, will now open the valve and skew the results.

I took the spring out with a spring compressor and substituted a 'soft spring'. Then I found the point that the intake valve was closest to the piston, it was NOT TDC, and set my dial indicator right on the rocker above the valve tip. Then I zeroed my indicator and pushed down on the the rocker until the valve hit the piston and held it. I then read my dial indicator and that was my minimum valve clearance. I checked my valve clearance at TDC also. At TDC i got .250" at closest P/V I got .110". That is the reason that the TDC method won't work. The cam will lift the valve due to overlap at some point before and after TDC and because of that the valve will be partially open when the piston is very close to it. The minimum valve clearance is the EXTRA space between the valve and piston when they are the closest.
