I used a 2-jaw puller, and I had purchased threaded rod that matched the crank threads. I cut a piece of threaded rod and put it in the crank hole so the puller could push against it. Crank gear came right off.
You need a puller, and you need something to push against on the crank (don't push directly on the snout). It'll give.

Edit - and once you get it off, how do you plan to get it back on? The $17 I spent on 3 feet of threaded rod, 2 nuts, and 2 washers, was the best money on tools for the whole cam/oil pump/timing chain job. I cut the rod for this part, and I also used a piece (along with a piece of pipe) to push the new gear on (using a nut and washer to 'push'), as well as push on the balancer pulley. I got the hardware from a local bolt store (not a Home Depot, but a bolt specialty shop).
