Default Tick after change to synthetic normal?

I've used regular oil for 27,000 miles and just changed my cam. I used 30 valvaline right after I swaped cams because it was cheap and I wanted to change to synthetic shortly after the new cam. I noticed very little valvetrain noise. I was kind of surprized after reading all the threads about engine noise after a cam. I switched to 10 w30 mobil 1 synthetic about 70 miles after the cam swap. Now I have a lot more valvetrain noise and a slight tick. The only thing I changed was the oil. Now I'm wondering if I should go back. Is it normal for synthetic oil to make more noise? TIA.

You will get more noise with synthetic oils. Also those taller springs will make it sound like a sewing machine at a idle.

Synthetics might make it last longer but it leaks easyer and makes more noise. I personnally have no problems with regular oil. you just need to make sure you change it every 2500 miles.

Good luck.

Ok thanks. So is it a big deal to switch back to regular oil? Some people say you shouldn't switch back, I don't understand why. I don't mind changing oil often, I just want it to run good and quiet.

I run synthetic and when I swapped the 4.8 with a LS1(w/new valvetrain) it got a whole lot louder and actually lately its gotten a little louder but Ive been told its normal and/or its lifter noise-blah blah blah. In all reality I cant stand it!LOL! Hell with all the probelms I had with the 4.8 dying and then 2 days after the LS1 swap getting psiton damage any knocking/ticking made me nervous!

I think the problem is you went from a 30W to essentially a 20W. Mobil-1 is about 10 Cst at temperature which is very low in the 30W range (<9.3 is 20W). I would switch to a synthetic that has greater viscosity at temperature like German Castrol 0W-30 or Amsoil 5W-30. The Mobil-1 oils are very thin.

Thanks for your advice, I think I'm going to try that. I've read a lot of good things about the german w0-30. I just hope I can find it.

let us know what you think when you change it to GC. I ran mobil 1 5w-30 all last season...and now i have pepboys proline 5w-30 and its a lot quieter. I saw the GC in autozone yesterday, but was afraid to spend $35 and have the valve train get louder, and then have to switch it back. thanks
