Default oil pump

ive heard that these have a tendency to fail on pre 00 cars. is it worth it to get an slp heavy duty pump? where is the pump located on the stock LS1? is it a hard install? is it somthing i could do myself, or would i need profetional instalation? (17 years old. experienced with cars, but not as much as id like to be) thanks for your help.

thanks alot. one thing though. if my current 98 pump fails, will it fail slowly so i can react and get a new one, or will it just suddenly shut off and destroy my car?

If you plan on doing a cam and timing chain mind as well go ahead and do a oil pump especiall since it's a 98. I had mine done right at 100,000 miles. You can get a Ls6 oil pump from SDPC pretty cheap. Call Kris at Ext 353.

the "ported" ls6 oil pump is a popular choice, you have to remove the pulley, water pump, front cover, and unbolt the oil pan (to get to the oil pump pickup tube). oil pumps usually dont just "go out" unless they get trash in them from somthing taking a dump in the motor. the oil is sucked into the pump from the pan BEFORE it goes to the oil filter, so it is pumping un-filtered oil. the oil pressure will go down more and more if the oil pump is out, but keep in mind that more than just a crappy oil pump will cause a loss in oil pressure (bearing problems etc.)

the "ported" part means its been taken apart and the casting fudge-ups have been removed for better flow. and yes an ls6 oil pump will bolt right up to an ls1.

Ported is nice, but not necessary. You can also buy a new pump and port and shim it yourself quite easily.

You should replace your pump as the stocker will usually fail at once, not slowly. One minute youll be fine, and the next minute your car will be knocking and your oil pressure will be 0. and oil pump is cheap compared to rebuilding a motor after a spun bearing.

I dont mean to scare you, but you should know that oil pumps do fail all at once. Replacing it is good insurance.
