Default Gas Mileage?

Car: 99 Z28 M6

I have had this car for about 2 weeks, and am averaging about 12 miles to the gallon :-/. I am not driving it that hard but the things seems to be guzzling gasoline like there is no tomorrow. I have a skip shift eliminator. should i shift to fourth when it tells me to? Something in the motor has to be off, cuz I have heard averages way higher than 12. Any suggestions? Thanks!

I just filled up today with 14 gallons. That tank had about a quarter tank of 65-ish highway and the rest in the city. I wound up with 20.75 mpg.

When I first got mine I put a couple of tanks of fuel system cleaner through it as soon as I got it, changed the oil, new filters, etc. Then went out for a couple of hours on the open highway at about 70-ish. I got 26mpg on that. I have the A4 and a 3:23 gear.

I'd say put a couple of tanks of cleaner through it and do the usual tune up things. Then drive a while on the hwy to see what your base/best mileage can be. Then work your way down from there.

Just my opinion.

I second the plugs. I bought a new to me Dodge Ram with the 5.9 V8. I knew it wasn't gonna be great on gas (understatement of the week) but it was bad. I thought about the number of miles on it 40k or so and figured it probiably had the original plugs in it. Sure enough yep it did. I replaced the plugs and it went from getting maybe 270 miles on a 25 gallon tank to about 315 or so. Big difference. If you still have the stock platiums ditch em and go with a non platium NGK or something like that. Change em once a year for $30 or so can't go wrong really.

Those Iridiums are working for me also. I bought a set ($8 each). I have 32k miles on the originals. I took a couple of them out and they look exactly like the new ones! So I put them back in. They say there good for 100k but I think I'll change them out at 50k to be on the safe side.
