The long K&N is the HP2006, the short one is the HP1007.

To answer the question of the best oil for the LS1, cost no object, my vote is still for German made Castrol Syntec 0w30 (the green version)

Thanks for the info patman!

I'll be sure to switch to the K&N for my next oil change.

Being that I am in Florida, and by looking at my mods, should I switch from the M1 10W 30 to a thicker oil, or will what I have used since the car had 1500 miles (the 10W30) suffice....I never had any problems, and I really don't race the car at all. It's never been to the track. Believe it or not, I did the cam for sound only...lol.

I am going to the dyno tomorrow....everybody wish me luck!

Manny

Hey Patman,

I thought 0w30 oil was for cooler climates?

How will the 0w30 oil hold up in warmer climates?

I live in New Mexico, so our summers get pretty hot... at the same time our winters can get pretty damn cold.

I already bought 6qts of the Deutschland Castrol just to test it out next time I change my oil... but I just wanted to know how this oil will handle the warmer climates?

0w30 Castrol works very well in hot climates due to the fact that it's viscosity at operating temp is thicker than most other 5w30 and 10w30 oils. In fact it's almost a 0w40. The viscosity is 12.2 cst at 100c, and the beginning of the 40 weight range is 12.5 cst. For comparison, Mobil 1 10w30 and 5w30 both have a viscosity of only 10.0 cst at 100c (putting them at the bottom end of the 30 weight range and almost into the 20 weight range) Because this oil is of a slightly thicker viscosity, it's HTHS number is higher, therefore it protects better in the heat than a thinner oil would.

Don't let the 0w portion of it's viscosity scare you. That simply means this oil is built so well that it can not only hold it's high temperature viscosity very well, but it can also pass the very difficult cold cranking test which allows it to be labelled a 0w. It simply flows extremely well in extreme cold due to it's very unique fully synthetic base stock.

At my local parts store here in Canada they have some Castrol SYNTEC SAE 5W40 that says it's specifically made for Audi Porche BMW and VW. On the back it is not made in USA or Canada but in Belgium. It's real expensive at C$10.62 a litre. Any ideas I haven't been able to find any German made 0W30. Maybe the higher grade would be better for my engine it has 145,000 hard Kms on it.

You can find the 5w40 Belgian made Syntec at Canadian Tire as well, and it's only about $7.50 to $7.99 there (and goes on sale once in a while too)

I would go with GC 0w30, although the 5w40 is a good choice for those who can't find the 0w30.
