Depending on the condition of the engine, the parts you buy, machine work you get done, and if you have to pay labor or not it can usually run from $1000 on up. If you keep everything that is usuable off the engine, do all the work yourself, and only replace what needs replaced, you might be able to reach a price range under that. This is what I have seen atleast when rebuilding engines.

since you want to save money, i assume youre willing to do a lot of this work yourself. also, is its dirt cheap im also assuming that you ave other transportation, that way you can garage the thing for awhile. ape sells their short block 347's for 2799 i believe. this means you get a prepped stock alum block, new bearings, forged rods and forged pistons. so thats 2799 with some cores, so prob less. like 2000 say. then you cant just bolt on those 150k heads, you could just have them cleaned up and with new seals and what not, prob for under 500. Bo white does ls1 heads for 650 i believe, and they flow alright. more than they would if you reused yours anyway. then say $100 for some one piece pushrods. 140 for a timing chain. 150 for an oil pump. 75 in fluids, prob around 100 in gaskets, maybe a set of harland sharp roller rockers for 340, and say 40 in paint to make it look nice.

bottom end short block........................$2000 after cores i think
(may be 2799 plus cores)
bo white heads...................................$650
Push rods...........................................$10 0
Comp 850 lifters...................................$200
Ported oil pump...................................$150
timing chain........................................$140
fluids (2 oil changes, coolant, etc.).........$75
gaskets (head, water pump,
front seal, maybe others)....................$100
---------------------------------------------------
$3415 total
options:
Cam............................................... $400
HS Rockers......................................$340
---------------------------------------------------
$4155

id say you should replace at least whats above and maybemore. look into ape though, they may come with new timing chains and what not already. i plan on doing my own rebuild in like...a long time (only got 35k), and other do it themselves. i just did heads and cam in the car, so pulling the motor would prob be easier. you could also try and get a stroker kit, have the block machined, and put it together yousrself, but thats gonna be ~3000 just for parts. i might also want to replace some key sensor when i was in there, jsut because you have a high mileage motor. maybe get new cam, crank, and knock sensors. could be a good idea. oh yeah, if you go with a new cam and heads, count on another $500 for the tune. say also that if you kept the stock cam and heads(heads jsut freshened up) take off another 600-700 bucks. that puts us at about 3500, and youd still have a brand new motor with forged rods and diamond pistons. nice...

I was under the impression I could have the stock block torn down , this and that , and reassembled for around 1000$ and it would run just like new. Am I dreaming here or what ?

well they are talking about getting forged parts...it'll be 1000 in just labor if you get a motor rebuilt...so i'd say you are definatly dreaming...i would pass up that car...you have to understand the engine in not the only thing with 150,000 miles...you may be looking at a new tranny and/or rear-end...that's a few thousand more added on...unless it's been modified with new suspension and stuff...i would say let it pass...unless you are getting this car for less than $2000 and i highly doubt that

i would pass that up...i got my car for ~10,000 and it had all the mods in my sig...it had 99,000 miles on it...since then i have done a couple things and fixed a few things so i've spent about 11,000 on this car...i am about to get the tranny rebuilt so that will be about a total of 13-14k spent on this car...but then it will basically be new except for the engine...with over 7k in mods...i'm sure the engine will last for awhile...but when it goes it'll just be time to move on to my next set of plans...a 408ci

you may just want to go and see it...maybe it isn't in good shape and that will put it to rest...it is in your area...wouldn't hurt to see what's up with it...i just don't think i would get a 150,000 mile car unless i planned on it being a race car...which is basically what my car is going to be once i have enough money to make it fast and get a daily driver...

Yeah, i dont think youll get much for $1000. At the very least, you need your cylinders honed, new pistons, new rings, new bearings, new valve guides seals and springs, timing chain and oil pump, new head gaskets and head bolts as well as other gaskets and seals, new main bolts and anything else im forgetting. Easily parts alone could add up to over 2K with no increase in performance.

The other thing is the 98 computer. If you're thinking FI later, probably better to look for 99+. Just my $.02
