Default Another valve spring height ?

I have the Crane (old style) 832 valve springs and Ti retainers.

I just checked all the spring heights on the passenger side head, and kind of to my surprise most of them measured 1.750” with no shims. I thought these were supposed to be 1.800” install height…according to Crane? Is it because I have ported heads with bigger SS valves that they come out different, stem length a little shorter maybe?

Also, all the heights are not exactly the same, slight difference. Five are 1.750”, two are 1.755”, and one is 1.760”. Are they close enough to not worry about shimming them to being exactly the same?

TIA,
Dan

i see you have absolute speed heads on the car. jay hung the valves pretty low on his heads. your vavles are probably stock length and hung lower than normal causing the valve stems to seem shorter. this would cause your install height to be a little shorter than what is advertised.

For safety's sake you might want to check what coil bind is with those springs. I have AS 5.3's and was going to a bigger cam only to find out that I was within .045 of coil bind so I had to change the retainers on the intakes.

Coil bind is 1.045...should have .090 left before coil bind with my cam.

That's plenty, all you need is .060. It's interesting that you have Crane valve springs I never heard of Jay using anything but Comp, 987, 978 and 977. I also thought he used Rev valves +.100

The heads originally came with comp 987's and was fine with the TR230 cam but not enough for the Trex, so I moved to the Crane 832's. I believe he used the Rev valves for the 977 springs because they have a higher install height being a longer spring.
