Gasket removal
I was just wondering if it would be a good idea to give the surface of the block (were the heads mate) i rub with some emery cloth (very fine sand paper) Also will very fine nicks harm anything?

Depends which gaskets you are using. Cometics need a clean staight surface and GM graphites are more forgiving.
At worst use a 600>800 wet sanding but make sure you do not spend too much time in one area.
I use plastic craper and brake cleaner with tons of coarser cloth (old jeans Denim), all of that while holding a shop vac tube close to scraping area, to suck everything in order not to drop debris in water holes.

I finished removing all of the gasket material it looks brand new. I first scrapped it off with a razor blade very gently and made very small minor nicks that are not noticible to touch and then sprayed wd-40 on the deck and sanded it with some very fine sand paper. it looks very smooth and feels like glass so ni think i got it done.

Scotchbrite and MEK. Thats how i cleaned my head surface and block each time. It will leave it residue free and VERY clean. The scratches the Scotchbrite leave are more like polishing. I have not had a leak with my cometics yet since doing it this way.
MEK is methyl ethyl ketone and can be purchased at Home Depot. Just wear gloves when using.
