Default How do you measure how much you flycut?

I will be flycutting my pistons .080 (intake and exhaust), how will I know how much I have actually taken out? I will be using the Isky tool to cut them, just unsure what to use to measure the depth and how. Thanks for any help!

NICE write up, thank you very much! How do you take the seats out of a head? Why do they have to be removed? I planned to use my stock heads I take off for the tool to go in, but if the seats have to be cut out like your article says, I will see if someone has a head already that is prepped for this.

Do we start with the .020" clearance? I want to cut to .080", so I would need to use .060" feeler gauge to set the collar right?

This looks like a load of fun already

The seats have to come out to make room for the cutting tool. If you tried with the seats still in, the heads wouldn't bolt up because the tool would be hitting the piston. I am looking into this stuff too. Fixing to do some heads and a bigger cam. I'm not sure how you get the seats out but I'm sure heat is involved. LG Motorsports rents the tool and a cut up head supposedly. Not sure what you mean about the .20 clearance.

You can measure the width of the eyebrow to determine its depth. I second calling LG and talking to them.

I used checker springs and a dial indicator to check the depth of my cuts, you can get them really close that way. I just used an old head, I stacked up two old head gaskets so the cutting tool would fit and made a first pass of cuts about halfway to where I wanted to go (.090 for me) that enabled me to bolt the head up with only one head gasket to make the final cut. You can't use two head gaskets to make the final cut because it will be off center from where it needs to be. Very time consuming but if you take your time it can be very accurate (within .004 for me)
