Default downsides of '98 LS1 longblock

Looking to get a 98 LS1 engine to use in my car... I plan on getting forged rods and pistons and using the stock crank. I also have a set of LQ9 heads.

What are the downsides of the LS1 longblock? I hear the hear the block can't be bored out far enough to accept 3.905 pistons, is this true? I also know the LS6 intake is better. Any other downsides to the earlier motors?

Individual coil packs bolted on the perimeter bolt valve cover's, vs. 99-02 using center bolt valve covers and a coil rail that then bolts to the valve cover. Not a big deal.

You'll need a 98 PCM and wiring harness specifically as the PCM attaches differently than other years.

98's came with 28lb injectors , and yes, get the LS6 or FAST90 intake.

Far as boring, not sure the 98 block is any different than the 99-01 LS1 blocks. Where did you hear that?

The 98 block is different. It will basically only take a hone of ~0.004".

You don't need a 98 PCM and harness. The only caveat to wiring it up is using a couple sensors from your old motor, specifically the oil pressure and water temperature sensors. You'd probably want to swap on your knock sensors as well, some 98's had a different connector on the harness, and the newer sensors are better anyway.

The 98's had a thinner sleeve that didn't tolerate as much of an overbore, but people HAVE gone .010" with them without trouble. The general consensus is to stick with a .005" overbore.

The 97-98 blocks also have two small holes above the rear cam bore for oil passage instead of the larger oil cavity opening on the 99+ blocks.

Thanks for the info guys... the overbore and wiring is what I was most concerned about!
