Default 383 or 402

Just wondering what the cost of having a 383 built with a lunati rotating assembly using my current block, heads, and headers would be? Would I be better off to buy a 402 short block?

that depends on if your planning the lunati rotating assembly for the 402 as well or are thinking along the lines of an SDPC or SLP 402.

at any rate i'd opt for the 402.

I'm very happy with my 383.

Given todays options, and if I had to do it all over again, I'd go for an LS2 402

I would rather do the 402, but I'm just wondering how much if anything would I save by building a 383 out of my current setup reusing everything possible. This would be considering using the same rotating assembly.

You won't save much if anything.

A little search would help you a lot

I've been looking into that very question. It seems to me that all the companies are building 402/408's for around 4K give or take I figured at full price the best I can build a 383 myself is about $3500 so I can get abot 20-25 cubes for about $500 and it'll be assembled for me. That would make me stupid if I didn't get the 402 buuuuuut I may notice I said MAY have a hook up on the Eagle rotating assemblies I'll find out in a coupla weeks when I build a old school 383 SBC for my old man's '65 C10. Now if this "hook up" pans out I'll be able to build a 383 LS1 fo about $2600 so then I get a 383. Oh and also I may have the same hook on Edelbrock schtuff.... Who's heads you think I'm gonna get?

I had a hook up with Eagle, Scat, JE and Lunati. Lunati actually came in the cheapest..weird huh? It cost me the same to do a 383 or 396 (actually any of the kits...I was tempted to go with a 427 or 454 as I also had a connection with Darton, but I thought I was getting a hook up with the machine shop that I was using. Long story short, I should have went resleeved and went with Steve D. (although I didn't know of him until after my block was already getting work done )

Take your time and read JRP's list of mod mistakes, I know I have bought things that I didnt end up needing

Okay got a qustion what do you think are the odds of one of the vendors who I would buy a 402 from to buy my stock LS1 short block? hell they can have the heads too!

And BTW if I'm lucky my hook up is gonna be with the local speed shop AND my machine shop between the two I'm not gonna pay full price for anything.

If you don't mind me asking, what companies are building 402s for about 4k. This is block with rotating assembly I assume?

I think Lingenfelter has a 4.005" bore and sdpc and tsp for example have 4.002" bore. Maybe that is why, because they both have a 4in crank.
