Default opinions

my friend has a 01 z a4, hes got longtubes, cut-out, intake, and 373's... he's been looking into gettin a cam and i think he's settled with the f13. i was telling him that i thought a 3800+ stall would be his best bet for this particular cam imo, not too small and leaves him some room to grow if he decides to go bigger with a cam later on... i know a bunch of guys just go with the 3500+, but ive also seen a few 3200+ and 4000+... just wanted to get a few opinions...
i was also curious on the difference between the 112 and 114 lsa.. this is for a daily driver, he wants good power, driveability, and gas mileage.. but just wondering the difference between the two lsa's, if they have ne consequece on ne of the above.
i think hes goin with crane dual valve springs, rods, seats and retainers as well.. what are some of your opinions and suggestions, thanks

Default An F13 is a good middle of the road choice for a daily driver cam.

3800 stall sounds good. Realize that he will NOT get good gas mileage in the city. I have a larger cam (MS3), 3.23's and 4,000 stall converter....~12 mpg around town and ~22 on the highway.

If he wants some lope (exhaust dependant for how much) a 112 is good, the 114 would give a slightly smoother idle. Power will be the same for most practical purposes.

Tack on a lid if he doesn't already have one, an underdrive pulley, ported throttle body and drag radials. Subframe connectors would be a good choice at this point as well.

yeah, he was wanting good sound, his car right now with the headers and cut-out sounds deep and throaty.. one of the best ones ive heard, i was leaning towards the 112 from what ive heard.. hes got a lid, ls6, ported tb, tb bypass, smoothbellow, maf... so intakes pretty much covered... hes doing suspension and radials after the swap... ne reasoning behind choosing that stall? thanks again

With converters the general rule is to go one size higher than you think you want. If he thinks he wants a 3500 or larger what he really needs is probably a 4k. I started with a 3500, added a larger cam than I previously thought I would, then restalled to 4k. Honestly I could go even higher but it is a daily driver that I plan to spray in the future.

Only thing that concerns me is the MAF. What MAF is it? Who will be doing the tuning? Does he still have the stock MAF? You can do some searches on the MAF, but generally the best idea is to just leave it alone.

You don't have to wait for the RPM's to climb. In fact it's just the opposite...the lower the stall speed the longer you have to wait for the revs to climb because you are not into the engine's powerband. Bigger the stall the more it'll throw you back...and the quicker it'll do it. Tell him to get a 4,000 stall, drag radials and never look back. Seriously.
