has anyone here built a 455 ci ls1?
hey guys. this winter i am building a 455 ci ls1 for the 02 ws6. it will actually be a 453. i will achieve this by a 4.180 bore and a 4.125 stroke. looking for aorund 10.5"1 compression. i was just wondering if anyone else has done this before and if so what heads and cam they used. i know i will need a big set of air flowing heads and i am in contact with afr and et performance now to see what they have for this project. I am not sure exactly what cam i should go with. it wont be a race car but something i will drive on the weekends and take to the track maybe 3 times a year. thanks for any help.

I'm guessing you're going with Dart's MID sleeves? I'd do some more research before I commit to that bore. The current offerings are recommended only to 4.160". You could still achieve a 455 with a 4.160" bore and a 4.185" stroke. MTI offers this in a GTO package so you know it's reliable. Plus, it's a REAL 455. I am thinking about doing this very thing but for me, it'll be in the distant future. With the 4.185" stroke you're making the motor "under-square"(is that a term...maybe the opposite of over-square?) but you'll have more torque in an LS1 than you ever thought possible.

I would call different shops like HPE or MTI, places that have used Darton's MID before to get more than one opinion on it. While Steve's personal experience might have shown that a 4.180" bore has worked before, someone else may have differing opinions and will be able to give reasons why. Otherwise, if it does work, you've got one nice, big-inch, oversquare motor.

Call Eastside... they may have a few different options for that project that may work better... it's a phone call, with the $$ you are looing to drop, I'd talk to EVERYONE you can, some people have different approaches to stuff that may work better for your specific needs.

I have this setup from MTI except mine is an LS2 dry sleeve. The Fast 90 and factory head are limiting factors on a motor this size so I would look at LS7 heads and intake or the ET Performance 265cc heads plus a sheetmetal intake that can really flow. My c/r is right at 12/1 and I did a relatively small cam 243/243 .653 lift 114lsa 114 icl.
