valvetrain noise

How much noise is normal with a moderate size cam, how much is to much. This thing sounds like a my grandmothers sewing machine and gets really bad if a WOT pass is made. Almost sounds like a lifter bleeding down. Any ideas ?

Cam specs? Moderate could be many different things to many different people.

The noise getting louder would certainly point to a collapsing lifter, but don't quote me on that 100%.
