i was thinking of trying to build a 427 bottom end, and i was wondering if i could use a crank from an old 427 vette

No, these motors are completly diffrent from old SBC's. You can plan on spending $5k-6K for the cheapest of budget 427 SHORT blocks. Then you have to buy heads, cam, and all the other little parts.

correct
our "budget" 427ci LS1 shortblock runs about $6400.00, the block alone runs about $3000.00

I got my block at $2550, so that saved me some. LS2 dry. With a Lunati crank, my 454ci is going to come in around $7100. Price was about $5850 with an Eagle 4.100 crank.

I was thinking of the LS1 block, but yes the LS2 block is less expensive to machine/sleeve due to the dry sleeve setup. forgot about that
