Default oil pressure frustration

ok I just got my '98 LS1 in my truck and running, I can't figure out how to hook up the original oil guage so I tapped into the hootus above the oil filter and used a manual guage. When I started it up it took a few seconds then slowly went up to about 30 t0 35 lbs. and when I revved it it went up to about 60lbs. but then it gradually went down to 0. So I'm thinkin the air in the line is the cause, so I take the line off while it's running and bleed out the air and reinstall. Same results, 0lbs at idle but if I sustain a rev at about 1500 to 2000 rpm it will come up. I put a new high vol pump from Lingenfelter in it when I installed the cam, I was careful not to pinch the o-ring but that doesn't mean that it still didn't happen. Is there a possibility that the headers burned through plastic line or maybe it's kinked, it got dark on me and my 2 year old was freakin out cuz of the open exhaust so I said f*ck it. Does anybody have any ideas. God I hope it's the guage!

OK but how, I thought the original one used some kind of sensor and you couldn't use a mechanical gauge? I'm learning though, I'm all ears.
