Question H/C -Problem?

I just had my new setup dyno tuned and we were a bit disappointed with the results. I was hoping to make 420-440rwhp with this setup but ended up with 414rwhp/398rwtq. Does anyone think that there is a problem or were my expectations just too high? My car is an '04 Z06 (stock dyno 356rwhp/349rwtq) with:
AFR 205's 66cc unmilled (possible F/I in future)
Dual coil valve springs
Hardened Pushrods 7.4"
ARP Head Studs
Stock rockers
Stock lifters
Cometic 0.04" head gaskets
Comp Cams 224/228 .581/.588 114LSA
Rollmaster Double Roller timing chain
Ported LS6 oil pump
Dynatech Supermaxx LT's with cats
Stock LS6 intake manifold/TB
Blackwing air filter
The car runs great and feels strong but only put out 414rwhp/398rwtq on the dyno. The dyno curves looked very smooth and the car kept making power up to the 6800 RPM limiter (sorry, I don't have a hard copy). The A/F was tuned to about 12.6-12.8:1 and about 28 degs. of timing adv. with no KR (higher timing got us no extra power).

I did the installation myself but there were no glitches. I did not degree the camshaft but I am 100% certain that it was good "dot to dot" alignment and the the timing chain crank sprocket was installed for standard timing. I also did not check pushrod length (I just assumed there wouldn't be any need for a shorter rod).

Any feedback would be appreciated, Ken

Should mill the heads for a nice 11.x:1

You lost compression by not milling.

I'm sure that has a lot to do with it but I didn't have them cut because there is an outside chance that I will be going back to an F/I setup. Also, the shop where I dyno'd did a stock headed '01 Z06 with LT's and this cam and got about the same numbers as I did. I know the LS6 heads are 64cc but I would have expected to see more of a difference.

Thanks, Ken

I run quite a few 224s. you lost roughly 2% of your output.
Or about 10rwhp.
A 11:1 would net you that 20 extra ponies you want.
I'm sure some good wideband tuning should bring out a few more as you are.

Dont feel bad, I dynoed 416rwhp/384rwt on the same setup. I can pull G5x3 cammed cars. Dynos are only tools.

Thanks, I need to think about if I really want to mill these heads.

Thanks for the input. It makes me more confident that nothing is terribly wrong with the setup.

Terribly wrong???

Your HP sounds just about right.

We can all HOPE that everyone gets the absolute best HP numbers that someone out there has made. But, your numbers sound right in the ballpark. You're only a few hp down from some of the best numbers. Nothing to be ashamed of. 58hp over a stock LS6 is awesome!

Read this thread, and you'll feel MUCH better about your gains!

"heads and cam only gave 8 rwhp wtf" https://ls1tech.com/forums/generation-iii-internal-engine/388764-heads-cam-only-gave-8-rwhp-wtf.html

"had AFR 205s and a 226 228 114 cam put on my 02 zo6. I also had em put in new pushrods, SVO 30 injectors, ngk plugs, and a new timing chain. the car had Vram intake SLP headers Y pipie Stock cats, and borla muffler. the car only gave me 8 extra rwhp. here is the dyno graph"

375hp and 378tq.

Feel better yet? You've got NOTHING to complain about.

Thanks, I've been following that thread. Have you guys figured it out yet? I'm not unhappy with my results, I just want to make sure everything I'm not missing anything that I should address.

Thanks again, Ken

I Agree,

Recently, we dyno'd a sprint car motor at 813 HP at the flywheel and it didn't do good coming out of the turns at all. They lost the race realllllyyyyyy bad. At the following practice they tuned it for the track and the next race the thing was an ANIMAL!!! They walked away with the race. The next week we pulled the motor to check it over, but before tearing it down we dyno'd it again and it built 786 flywheel HP.
I know you aren't circle racing this thing but you get the point. DYNOS ARE ONLY TOOLS!! They get you close, then you have to tune them at the track.

I wouldn't get all caught up in dyno numbers, you have a Vette, not a Mustang.
Take it to the track and see how it runs. HP numbers are overrated.

You're making good/safe power. A Z06 is a great car. Go out & enjoy it.

Ken, I made similar numbers with a similar setup (T1 cam - .559/221) - I do have a pulley and ported TB, so that could be some of the difference (plus you made more torque). Some have said ESP's dyno may read a little low, but like many have said I wouldn't sweat it too much.

Don't worry about the Dyno #s, My #'s were low.(408) The track numbers are the ones that matter. If I wanted huge Dyno numbers I'd buy a Cobra

I think I'm just going to leave the heads the way they are for now. I'm going to confirm the pushrod length and that's it. The car feels great and we are going to play with the tuning again after I put some miles on the car.

Thanks, Ken
