Default Low oil psi!

When I start my car oil psi shoots up to 20 psi then as it warms up it move down to about 15-17 at idle. If I rev it up to about 4 grand the oil psi follows and goes up to 40 (this is all while NOT under load). No my problem, while crusing at about 2 grand it's 25 psi but when I give it gas it goes up for a sec then starts to go down.

I read in my Chevy Ls1/ls6 Performance that @ 4000 oil psi should be at minimum of 24 psig. But after doing a serch on this board it seems that most of you guys think that that is too low.

Now to make this harder, I think that pre 2000 ls1 didn't have the best oil pump so that could be the cause. As for my engine, it came out of a 98 but it has an ls6 block and 241 castings on the head so I really don't know when it's from.

The only mod that has been done the the engine is a new oil pan (to make it fit in my 69) so I'm thinking could I have installed the pickup O-ring wrong?

Thanks in advance.

yeah, I would check the o-ring first. That seems to be the main problem with low oil pressure. You said you changed oil pans, the pick up tube isnt bottoming out on the pan is it? I had to check clearance on my pickup tube & pan when I swapped to a 408. Due to having to space the windage tray, it put the pick up tube closer to the pan. Just a thought. What oil are you running? I recently had castrol 10w30 full synthetic oil in my car & it wouldnt ever climb over 40psi even at wot. I swapped to mobil 1 10w40 fully synthetic & now with the ported pump it will almost peg out at WOT.
