I'm not sure about the combustion chamber either. I actually just started smoothing it out though. I'm not really doing any porting in that area, just making it shiny and smooth. I'm afraid of taking out compression.

I did read somewhere that it's better to have the combustion chamber as smooth as possible so things are less likely to attach to it after combustion occurs.

A cutaway of the before and after of the valve bowls would be freaking awesome too btw! Anyone have a cutaway pic of a specific amount of how far to go down?

Just polish the chambers out and deshroud the valves to the gasket line, thats all I do. More flow can be had to do more work but a flow bench is needed to guide you on this.

Bo, can you tell me how thick the intake swirl ramps are? I did some smoothing of the corners and I need to know how much to take out. This is what I did so far.

How does it look so far? Thanks

I have a practice head where the guy before me ported into the water jacket under the swirl ramp. Looks like as viewed from above the bowl its right about even with the back edge of the guide but about 3/8 under the flat ledge behind the guide. I would think you could probably take it down another 1/8 safely from the looks of your pics, but id wait for someone else to chime in

I chimed in on the other thread, leave everything shape and size wise alone and just blend and smooth(and take the rocker bolt boss out).

Take the rocker bolt boss right out as in the threads are showing?

Correct, cut it all the way out so that it looks like it was never there, except the threaded hole being there. Blend it into the existing surrounding wall so its a smooth transition.

Will do, thanks. That alone has got to be good for a few CFM.

Let me know what you guys think. This is what I have so far:

I basically just smoothed everything out. I took a tiny bit of material off of the area around the spark plug opening too.

Looks blingy, get a good finish on the exhaust port too(anything finer than 80 grit doest increase flow, just keeps carbon deposits down to a minimum). Intake ports leave as 80/120 grit.

Thanks! I used a dremel with a wire brush and a bunch of those brillow puff *****. I'll take some pics of them when I get a chance. It seemed to work pretty well.

Thanks Bo!

Do you think I lost any compression when I reworked the spark plug opening section? Does polishing the combustion chamber (as apposed to leaving it stock) increase flow at all? I'm thinking not, but I'm curious.

No flow on polishing but will increase when deshrouding. You may have lost a cc, may not even that.

Does anyone have a clear answer on what you are gaining by removing the rocker boss? i was thinking about leaving it on a set of 243 heads i'm doing for my ls1 truck, is it worth it to go ahead and knock it out? i was under the impression that the intakes were pretty good and the exhaust was what needed more attention.

Every ported LS head I've seen has the rocker bump removed. When you remove it, you're removing an obstruction that could cause turbulence in the port and you're gaining cross sectional area in that section of the port. Basically you improve the quality and quantity of airflow.
