Ok. I am installing a cam/heads right now. I just recieved everything today finally . So now I am going to install the cam...

I am installing the double roller chain. I got the new crank gear on and the cam is in along with the retainer plate.

Now I need some step by step help here. I need to get this cam lined up dot to dot.

I have been givin good advice on how to do this before, but I have been reading that I should be doing things differently.

Anyway I dont want to **** this up, so I want your guys help here.

I just feel better learning from you guys then reading ls1howto's instructions.

Ls1howto is right on the money. Don't forget to put a rag in the pan in case you drop a bolt in there. (Take my word for that one!)

Put the number one piston all the way up. Now just install the chain and line up the dots. It really is that easy. Just triple check to make sure you aren't off by 1 tooth.

I Started Dot To Dot Then Rotated The Motor 180* Then Used A Straight Edge To Line Up The Lower Dot To The Upper Dot Which Should Be Centered On The Top Of The Block, Then Rotated 180 Again If Everything Looks Good Your Set To Go.

No doubt. I always set it up and then turn the motor to double check. I caught myself being off once like that.

LS1howto is definitely right on the money. And like everyone is saying, definitely at least double check to make sure the dots line up by turning the motor over a couple times by hand and checking.

little tip:
After you take the crank pulley/cover and before you take the cam gear off. Line up the dot-to-dot, that should bring your piston 1 at TDC and you are sure your crank is at 12' Oclock.

Yea, it can be a little intimidating the first time because you know it will spell disaster if it's wrong, but it's really not too difficult. Good Job- how do ya like that MS3? Who's tuning it?

Wish I could tell ya!

I still need to put on heads and finish everything else.

I also droped the oil pick up tube bolt in the oil pan, so I am going to go fishing tommarow it looks like. I am sure that it will bug me more than now cause I am pretty damn drunk and faded right now. But in the morning my journey to autozone begins to buy a pen magnet; so hopefully I can fish it out tommarow.

I also used fishing line to install the bolt, it was working at first but the bolt fell right through the line...ahhh I was so close.

TSP is doing my tuning. I still got to send in my comp to them. I am in no rush cause I am sure that this will set me back some good time.

Anyway I am done rambling on, going to bed now

This may sound like a stupid question but, when the #1 piston is at TDC and the crank dot is at 12, how does the engine know that it is TDC on the compression or exhaust stroke? Is there a cam sensor? If so, does this have any bearing on the install? Just wondering.

Crank dot at 12 is #1 at TDC on compression stroke. Remember, cam turns two revolutions for every one revolution of the crank. There is a cam sensor, it has nothing to do with this install though.
