Default why is the vally "block off plate" so thick?

the LS1 has a dead vally- but i noticed my the plate was REALLY thick. What gives? you would think a thin peice of of stamped steel would do the trick.

Supplier planning to pull a cost savings rabbit out of the hat?

I would imagine it's thick because it's where the knock sensors are located.

Yeah I'd say the same thing because of knock sensors.

im sure it also adds rigidity to the block (think about the aftermarket girdles for sale) unlike first gen SBCs as you know the intake isnt a structural part of the motor in Gen IIIs thats my guess

Metal distorts with heat, and I believe it is worse when it is exposed to heat cycling (hot then cold, then hot...) - a thin piece would warp fairly quickly and you would be letting all kinds of nasties into the valley....

Using steel and aluminum creates its own issues, differences in expansion with heat. just my two!
