The S-cam looks very similar to the MS3 based on the numbers @ .05, but a slightly wider LSA (115 vs 113).

There is a decent amount of info available if you search. The X3 will fit under stock heads, even on a 112, but it is close. I believe the X4 will fit on a 114.

------

The G5X series cams are all traditional splits.

i'd be curious to see that powerband on the s-cam, it would probably pull to ~7,000 having a relatively smooth, flat curve.

^ It holds its peak for about 500rpm. Looks like it would make great track times on a high rpm launch.

Doesn't peak as high as you would think it would.

My MS3 through a TCI SSF4000. I was impressed with the numbers considering that my car only made 319 rwhp with longtubes, duals, CAI and a lid.

wow, didn't carry like i thought it would. the x3 is similar in size (except the difference in lsa) and it pulls higher than that. hell, even the x3 on 112 dynos i have seen pull higher. eh? s-cam would still be a nice street cam.

on all the cams i have mentioned - no flycutting is needed with stock heads.

i would guess that the x4 would fit without flycutting on any lsa. i think the "base" x4 is on a 111. the t-rex is advertised at 242/248 on a 110, more like 244/249 109 lsa from the cam cards i've seen...so theoretically the x4 would fit with much room to spare.

That kind of thinking can get you in trouble. There is a lot more to it than simply the numbers @ .05. Example: The G5X3 is often said to not fit under stock heads on a 112. It does, but it's close and LG apparently didn't want to take the chance that someone would install it off ever so slightly, miss a shift, etc and have problems. The X3 is a good bit smaller than the T-Rex....

Hm...from what you guys have said, I'm pretty much looking at the MTI S and the LG G5x3. Also, might be thinking about the T-Rex - according to TR, valve clearance is only a concern with modified heads - when I get around to heads, I'd have more than enough money to pull the pistons and have the flycut, so that's not a big concern. Right now, I'm pretty much split 50/50 on the T-Rex and the G5x3.

Really, what is the best way to look at a cam and determine if valve clearance is going to be, or could be, an issue?

if you have a stick car, valve clearance is essential due to the simple fact that it will be much easier to plant a valve in your piston if you miss a shift. springwear is the only other negative i can see. as far as the x3 and t-rex go, the t-rex is much larger and would require more attention to tuning and general setup (gears, tire, etc). both cams should pull to 7k, so don't be afraid of high rpm use to get the most out of either cam.

Don't skimp on spring choice with the TRex. Use Comp 921's.
I've had 2 friends with Trex setups break Crane duals.

i was merely thinking...if i had any question about ptv clearance i would use the clay method of checking. i am aware of what is involved in cam selection and what's required to make it work properly. only speculation..

Clay is innacurate in LSx hydraulic motors.
Dial indicator measurement is the way to do it.

the G5X4 is also smaller than the TREX. i believe as far as stock heads are concerned, the TREX is about the biggest you would want to do. the TREX is a 242/248 .608/.612 110 lsa.

Well, I'll definitely be running 4.10s (10 bolt, until I kill it, then either a 12 bolt, or a Ford 9"), and 315 ET Streets or GS-D3s. A shop will be doing the tuning (not quite sure who yet, as the East Coast doesn't have a plethora of shops...the closest LS1 shop to me is Rapid, and that's 3+ hours) and I have no qualms leaving it there until they get the tune as dead on as they can. Running up top to 6700-6900rpm was pretty much in the plan from the start, and I'm not too worried about going that high, but it seems like that's about the top limit for a stock crank/rods LS1, due mainly to rod bolts.

I'm really looking harder at the T-Rex now, because it seems like it'd offer more potential with aftermarket heads, because of the lift numbers, although the G5x4 looks pretty damn good in that area, also. When I swap to a different set of heads, I'll just have the pistons pulled, spec'd, and flycut accordingly. I'll definitely be using either Crane 921s or PP Duals, although that'll take a bit more research for me to decide on. Definitely a hell of a lot bigger cam than I started out wanting - the 224/224

If you do end up with the T-rex (look carefully into what would work with heads, I don't think the T-rex will be optinal) I suggest Comp 921's.

Well, the problem is solved - I can get a T-Rex, used, for a really damn good price, and since it was down to that or the G5x4, T-Rex it is. Now to start buying the rest of the valvetrain stuff.
