I'm Installing the oil pan after replacing the rod bolts, cam, timing chain and oil pump.
I noticed when I dropped the pan, that GM used some type of white non hardening sealer in the corners. It looks like they used it in the spots wherever three casting meet. Timing cover, block and oil pan or rear main cover, block and oil pan. Is this some special sealer or is it just pipe thread sealer? Can I just use a dab of silicone sealer in those areas, and if so, what is the correct one to use? Permatex copper, black, blue, red. They all have slightly different properties.

I installed two oil pans recently and I didn't use any sealant or compound of any type save for Loctite. I just finished up a 14hour drive and there's no leaks to speak of.

I know this doesn't answer your question, but I guess what I'm trying to say is it's not the end of the world if you don't figure this out.

 

i just also recently dropped the oil pan for my oil pump swap and just used a little bit of high temp permatex were the timing chain cover and pan meet and havent had any problems after a 6 hour drive.
