Default What do I have?

I have an engine that I know is from a C5 vette but I don't know what year it is or what specs it has (hp, torque,etc.). The casting number on the block is: 12550592 and there is a smaller number that looks like it was done with an electric engraver (small dots) it is:9717106101

Can anyone tell me what I have?

Thanks in advance!!

What is the 3 digit number, on the head's lower right hand passenger side, by the oil fill tube?
If it is 241 then it is a mid 00>04 (If it has EGR it is a 00)
If it is 806 then it is a 97>98 (perimeter valve cover bolts)
If the intake manifold have a tube going into it on top, behind the throttle body (EGR), then it is a pre 2001. (assuming the motor is stock)

Post some pics, we will tell you.

I found a number on the back of the pass. side head "806" just below the edge of the valve cover. Its really the only number I see on the head besides a number below each spark plug. It has valve covers with bolts around the outside edge.

This motor was in a car that had an interior fire, the intake melted but none of the sensors or any other plastic on the motor is damaged. The fire destroyed the vin # and the sticker inside the door jamb. My brother got it from where he works in a scrap yard after the insurance company brought it in. We have salvaged the motor, driveshaft, transaxle, as well as front and rear subframes with all suspension pieces intact. Now if we can just find out the year so we can get parts and sell what we don't want.

I found the "806" casting number in another thread so it looks like it is either a 97 or 98 as you said with the valve covers. Any idea how to narrow it down between the two? Thanks!!

I looked at the casting #s and 12550592 are in deed 97/98.
There is little difference between the 2, some later 98 blocks had better casting material that is all.

1n 98 there also was 2 other castings
12559846> improved liner design
12559090> improved cam bushing material
