Default Solid roller..... cant make up my mind on lifters

I have a 259/267 .705/.702 and I ALSO have some modded stock lifters that I got through some trading and stuff. I was wondering if those were legit lifters or what. Money isn't a big problem but what I have seen when looking at aftermarket lifters is that they are listed for cams up to .650 lift.......... sooo what would be the difference in them and the stockers and what should I do about that

Tell me what you guys think

Josh S.

I believe the oil ring travels past the lifter oil galley with cams over .650 as they normally have a smaller base circle. I believe that this is the issue with anything designed for a certain lift range in the ls motor. Morel makes a longer then stock solid roller lifter I believe which cures this problem. Now if only someone would make a lifter which has an offset for c5-r head ports, stock .842 diameter, and the proper oiling restriction to keep too much oil from going to the top end, i'd be super happy.

Good luck. I'm sure others will chime in with somethings to add as i'm sure i've left something out.

Chirs,

Whats the lobe lift rating? .405? Cause that's all that matters really.

Lobe lift isn't the gotcha. It's base circle.

My original cam from Thunder worked fine with Crane solid roller lifters. It had a ~1.40" base circle with .381" lift (lobe). My Futral (Cam Motion) cam didn't work so well with the Cranes (oil pressure of 10psi at idle), even though it too had a .381" lift (lobe). My Futral cam had a smaller base circle (I want to say 1.30" base circle, it's been a while). I switched over to Morels. No problems now.

I'd get a set of Morels and call it a day.

Yes, .405" lobe lift, sorry Bret, I wasn't thinking.

I thought all LS1 had a pretty big base circle. Is the small base circle due to a regrind?

Gotta think one more step ahead....

when you have a camshaft that has to be installed in a block, the cam lobes have to clear the cam bearings.... so if you want to add more lift to the cam lobes you have to reduce the base circle.... hence why I asked what the max lobe lift was. You can have cams with reduced base circle lobes, especially if the lobes are orginally designed for a motor with a smaller journal diameter and they don't want any change in the designed profile specs. You would just shrink the base circle to what it would be on a smaller journal cam. Not always the best option with a LS1 motor.

Here is the issue with crane lifters. I don't know if this could roll over to other solid lifters. https://ls1tech.com/forums/generation-iii-internal-engine/406779-crane-solid-roller-users.html

my lobe lift is .414/.413 but also on top of the cam sheet it had lobe size... which is .325/.325 written in with an ink pen (which I have never really noticed until now)

i guess i'll just order the morels
