Help me buld my motor!
Ok so here is the current order:
408ci iron block
6.0L block
Eagle Forged LS1 Crank 4" Stroke
Callies LS1 Rods
Diamond Pistons -2cc
Diamond Pro-Select Rings
Federal Mogul Main Bearings
Federal Mogul Rod Bearings
Dura Bond Cam Bearings
ARP Main Studs
FAST 90/90 NW /fast rails
42 lb injectors
I plan to go with Ed for the cam but I need to figure out head gaskets and heads to achieve an appropriate compression ratio and I am looking for some advice. The car will be mostly street driven but will see the occasional track day. It is NOT my daily driver so we can push the envelope a little bit. I will be tuning it myself hopefully.
Gaskets?
ETP 240s or AFR 225s? Availability might play in here! Milled?
Lifters?
Pushrods?
Any recommendations on a good compression ratio to shoot for? 93 octane will be used.

youll need to have that eagle crank "turned" to make sure it is in good condition.
the ETP heads come in 59-72cc combustion chambers.... you wont have to mill
if you go with a large cam and high compression youll have to get an extra set of valve reliefs close to the center of piston because the valves on the ETP heads are in different places than OEM....
if you want the ARP head studs go ahead and get the 1/2'' ones.
for 93 id shoot for 11:1 CR
and cometic head gaskets are good

Sorry, I should have been more specific. The 408 shortblock is brand new, balanced, so no turning of the crank should be needed. It looks like the ETP heads might involve a little more attention if I run a big cam or high compression so I will probably go with the AFR 225s. What compression would get me to the 11.1 ratio?
Also, what items should help me determine if I should get the MLS gaskets or cometics?

it doesnt matter if that eagle crank is new or not.... they come in bad all the time... 8 out of 10 are bad... but after they are turned they are just as good as any crank....

Do I need to wait until I purchase and assemble everything before I determine the appropriate pushrod length? Heads will be AFR225s, probably comp OEM lifters, stock rockers, say cometic gaskets

if its not LME (thats the only one ive delt with) i would ask and make sure they turn the crank before put together....
Where is the compression sticky? I need to know how much I would need to mill AFR225's with cometic gaskets to achieve what compression ratios in the 11.1-11.8 range.

it always depends on what your wanting to do with the motor....
are you looking for high rpms (7400+) or high lift cam (.660+)
Im not sure I guess. I am just determining this as I go. I would assume that I would not be spinning that high and the lift would be less(having Ed custom make me a cam). The only reason I ask about the OEM lifters is that they are cheaper than the comp 850s and 875s and I have only heard bad things about both those two lifters. All of the other lifters cost $400-500. Money really isnt an issue although I do see any reason that spending 400-500 as opposed to 200 unless someone can prove that I would need them.

All I have left is the LS1 intake, Stock TB, rails, injectors, MAF, and heads. Need some heads? Or upgraded Vavlesprings? I have the PRC valvespring kit with 800 miles on it and pushrods.
Spend the little extra money for the Callies crank. I am not happy with the quality of my Eagle crank at all. Once you factor in labor, mallory metal to balance it, and machine time to cut down the counterweights to clear the pistons, it is almost the same price at the Callies.

Can anyone comment on the lifters?
factory lifters are good for say factory lifters. I would talk to your builder. Remember this, the lifters you get now could be a limiting factor in the future if you say wanted to upgrade the cam. Just food for thought.
