Default new lifters or not?

I'm swapping heads and I can't decide whether to change the lifters or not. They have 90k on them. I know I'll eventually talk myself into changing them. With the cam swap I upgraded everything possible. Maybe what I'm asking is for someone to talk me out of it. What do you guys think?

I would definately change them since you have the heads off. Why risk one going bad after that many miles and damaging all your new parts.

yeah, they arent really that expensive, and they will be real hard to change if you wait too long. I just used a set of stock replacements, but they are new, and are workin great.

i replaced my lifters when i got a new motor since the heads obviously would be off, went with GM 850-16s.

mellings are a good lifter too. almost went with them but found a better deal on the 850-16s, by good bit.

No need to change the lifters unless it's a really high mileage engine, which might be a decent idea to play it safe (such as the 90k mile engine mentioned earlier). However, IF you are going to upgrade, just go with some Comp OE or GM replacements, and stay the hell away from the Comp R's unless you REALLY know what you're doing.

While you have the lifter carriage out increase the size of the oil retun hole a bit.

Why Morel? What advantage do they have over stock lifter?

They're pretty spendy, close to $500 the price I saw.

What are the quality/reliability benefits of the Melling lifters over the OEM lifters - if any?

They look like a quality piece. Theyre the enclosed type, not the exposed roller type like the late model oem ones. That probably offers some structural rigidity.

I'll be replacing mine next time I have the heads off, and my car only has 35k on the clock. It's a lot of labor to get in there, and the parts are pretty cheap. It's worth it IMO.
