Default Engine starter bump switch wiring

Can you simply take the small terminal on the starter and wire it to a switch? Does the switch need to be grounded or to the hot side?

I made one from a push button, momentary switch I got at Home Depot, biggest one I could find. I used 14 ga. speaker wire and aligator clips and hooked up one to the hot starter terminal and one to the solenoid (small) terminal. Works great.

That's right, just connect to the small terminal on the outside of the starter and to hot 12V and it will crank over.
** Caution, with the spark plugs out the engine will spin over with no real load on the crankshaft. The cam bearings are fully loaded with valve spring pressure, they won't last long with no oil pressure. It takes over 30 seconds cranking the starter to get oil pressure to the cam or crank.
