Question Emissions and Camshaft size

My son wants to install a new camshaft in his 94 Lt1. The problem is the our state has emission testing. What is the largest cam we can install and still pass. PLease, let us know what size you've used and did it pass?

Try the LT1 section as well.

I used an LS6 cam (I dont remember the specs other than 117.5 LSA) but that was in an LS1 engine that is in the 98's and up. I THINK you can get about what you want but you will need to get the computer tuned if you go with a med. to larger cam. The tune at most shops is about $400. But Im not positive this applies to the LT1. Check your private message box.

I think that 230 duration is the max for emissions states. But that is on the LS1, not sure if the LT1 is similar +/-

Comp Cams 305 is the biggest you can go without major tunning just for emissions. If you want to be 100% safe go with the LT4 Hot Cam it is one of the cheapest and makes great #'s

It all depends on what the rest of the system is setup like. If you keep the stock exhaust system, you may be able to get away with more camshaft. The only problem with this is that you won't be able to take advantage of all the power because of the lack of exhaust flow.

There is no magic camshaft numbers that either will or won't pass emmisions. All you can do is hope someone on here has the same setup as you and has already passed emissions.

Tips for the dreaded emmisions test.
First, make sure that you are not sitting in line to long. You want the cat to be warmed up, and sitting there idling doesn't help.
Before you go to the test, change your oil. This will take any of the fuel in the oil out of the equation.
Make sure your plugs are brand new, and maybe even change the wires. This will make sure nothing is going to mess up the test.
Before the test go out and "clean the cat Out". Doing this makes sure that it is running at peak efficency for the test.

All of these tips are for anyone that has a modded car and wants to make it through the sniff test. If you take the test and fail by a small amount and didn't do any of this, it might just be what you need to get you over the edge.

I am not saying that this is going to work everytime, but it is a good practice.
