Default noisy valvetrain

just put my engine in my car, built a 383 stroker with patriot ls6 style heads. i am gettting alot of noise, a loud ticking. i have new lifters and hardened pushrods but i still have my stock rockers in the car. The car has 231/237 595 lift cam. Is it possible the rockers could hit valve covers or dose anyone have any other ideas.Please help.

The rockers won't hit the valve covers with that cam. Maybe a loose rocker? Does it sound like a single tick or all of the valves ticking? Is it possible that your pushrods are too short? I know that if you pinch the o-ring installing the oil pump it will cause oiling issues that can cause lifter noise. Just trying to throw some ideas out there for you.

im using stock length pushrods, and it dose sound like all the rockers are noisy

is it possible that the rockers are to tight, i got all my torque spec from ls1howto.com and torqued everything to their specs

I doubt it. I used that how to myself with no problems. Does patriot mill the heads at all?

i guess i will be pulling valve cover back off just to see if i find something, car seemed to run fine just real noisy.

if the heads are unmilled and your using stock head gaskets then the pushrods will probably be a little too short.Get some comp 7.425" to get some more preload.

If all else fails make sure you're not losing oil somewhere.

It will be a little noiser than stock because of the heavier seat pressure springs. It shoudnt be MUCH noiser though. No oil and it will tick like a MF.

i pulled the valve cover and looked at the rockers, im not positive if it is getting enough oil when it is running but there was plenty of oil on everything. some of the rockers seem to have a little play in them. Is this normal and if so how much should they have. Could that be causing my noise.

haha, no. Rockers should be tight and have absolutly zero play. If there is play in the rockers you need to fix that asap. If you followed ls1howto.com's instructions I don't see how they could have play unless you just forgot some.

you might need longer pushrods. The base circle on that cam is smaller thatn the stocker. I had to go with 7.425s on mine with my new cam.

Like that the rocker can teeter-totter from making contact with the valve and having a gap?

Too short of pushrods, and your geometry is likely off.

what size lift is it when you need to upgrade to adjustable rockers?

It's not the lift, it's the base circle of the cam and the whether the heads have been milled any. Also if you choose a different degree head you will need to change as well.
