It certainly wouldn't hurt. I've decided on a 226/230 cam from Futral, and when I get that, Comp 850's will be going in. My car has 95k on it, and runs great, but for $200 and with my car being a daily driver, I'm not going to risk it.

Necessary is one issue, worth while is another.
Roller lifters are the only lifters that can be used on a new cam, so it is not necessary for you to install new lifters.
Worth while, sure. If you have the money and need to pull your heads, new lifters would be good insurance.
If I were only doing a cam on a motor with 55K miles, I would pull the old cam w/o pulling the heads and inspect the lobes on the old cam. If the lobes did not have any indications of a bad lifter roller, I would put the new cam in without installing new lifters.
If for some reason you need to pull the heads, I would spring for new lifters.
Just my humble opinion.

I am replacing my lifters only because I am doing a head and cam swap. For 2 reasons First I have around 73K, Second while your that far into it you might as well change out gaskets, lifter trays, timing chain,push rods, springs kit, and manifolds. Essentially freshing up the top end so cost wont be so high when its time to do shortblock. thats mt 2 cents
is everyone forgetting that you have to pull the heads and get new head gaskets/bolts when changing lifters? that raises your cost over the initial $200 lifter price. also, why pull a stock head just to replace it with...itself? if you're going to fight pulling the heads, at least put something better back on it.

i didnt get new lifters with my f13. However i do plan on getting new heads and morel lifters this summer hopefully. So by the time i get heads my car will have less than 5k miles on the cam.

Na I have 1000 invested in my 241's and port work will be like stage 2ish have them match .551 lift. that includes all new stainless ferrea intake and exhaust valves, patriot spring kit.
