Default Difference between ported heads...

What is the difference between lets say a patriot head and an AFR head as far as porting goes? There both ported, so what makes the more expensive head so much better?

The heads we currently port are OEM GM castings. The flow on our OEM ported heads flow great. With a 2.02" valve, .600" flow will be in the 300-304 range. The AFR head is an aftermarket casting. We will soon be releasing our own aftermarket casting that will have all the features that a customer wants in and aftermarket castings. These will be available for $1795.00 per pair assembled.

The budget heads start off as factory castings. Because of this, they work along the limitations of what a factory head can do. Any porting generally makes the runner volume big and drops the airspeed (velocity) of the head, which reduces throttle tip-in response and low speed torque.

Aftermarket heads like the AFR 205s were designed and manufactured just like a serious head-porter would make them: Raised roof, better short turn radius, better bowl/throat design, much better more efficient combustion chamber design that allows higher compression with lower octane fuel, etc. When you start with a clean sheet, you can eliminate many of the compromises the factory had to incorporate into their heads. More power, better torque, better throttle response and better fuel economy are many of the benefits the AFR 205s have over the factory-based budget heads.

thats a good explanation. Thanks! I guess the aftermarket castings are way better. Now i can see spending 500-800 $ more on heads.
