PLEASE HELP! New Core F14 Doesn't Fit!!!

Am I doing something wrong? After torquing down the cam gear bolts, while trying to degree the camshaft, I found that the engine could not be turned by the crank bolt. I noticed that the cam gear was pressed against the cam retainer and after removing the cam, I found this:

The first picture is of the new core F14 with the cam retainer and the cam gear placed on the camshaft. NOTICE: The lack of clearance between the cam gear and cam retainer. Now compare this to the clearance between the cam gear and cam retainer on the stock camshaft in the second picture. There's no way that this is going to work. I can't believe I waited four weeks for this cam and this has happened. Am I missing something?

Dude, compare the clearance between the cam gear and cam retainer between the two pictures.

is there a way for you to measure the step on the nose of the cam?

I just installed my F13 with the new core and its fine. There was recently another problem earlier this week about the crank not turning after a cam install. Pull your cam sprocket bolts out and your cam retainer plate bolts out and compare all 7 of them. The cam sprocket bolts are slightly longer and if you accidently use one of those bolts in the retainer plate, your motor will not turn. Make sure you have installed the 3 longer bolts in the cam sprocket, and the 4 shorter bolts in the retainer plate. The length of the bolt isnt more than about 1/8" so pay attention.

Agreed.. Check your bolts, make sure they are right.. this has happened to a friend of mine.

Peace,
Josh

I am sure that I used the correct bolts because they were kept in seperate marked zip lock bags. Not really sure how I can measure the step.

lay the cams flat on a table and nose to nose with the steps offset to each other, kinda like a puzzle

If the sprocket is bolted to the cam can you turn the retainer plate? If not you have a problem. Are you using different sprockets and retainer plates in these photos or the same ones? The gap he is referring to is the tiny gap just above the retainer plate if I understand the explanination.

The retainer will not turn with the gear bolted to the cam on the new one :( . It will turn on the old one. Yes, you are correct about the gap.

Man, this is cam from hell.
2 things, I've been watching lately.
1> Futral should reconsider doing business with Cam Motion
2> Cam Moton should get their s**t together.

redtail2426 Apr 9, 2006 10:58 AM

seems like they just cant get it together, good luck to you in getting that cam to work, and good luck to futral and cam motion with there future businesses

Futral Apr 9, 2006 03:50 PM

Joe,Iam very sorry this has happened to you. I will get another cam shipped out Monday. I can't e-mail you since my PC had a failure yesterday.

BriancWS6 Apr 9, 2006 09:01 PM

Alan, I understand things like this happen. If you can get me out a good one as soon as possible, it'll all be good. Please give me a call tommorrow (4/10). Thanks

Quick up date. Here's how a company with good customer service handles a problem. Alan had Cam Motion over night me a new cam. Received it Tuesday 4/11. Guess what. No cam gear dowel pin :bang: Was I happy? Not particularly  I called Cam Motion directly.Told them the situation. Very apologetic and said that they would over night a new dowel pin. I can deal with that. Got a call from Cam Motion about an hour latter and was told that instead of a new dowel pin, that the owner was personally going to grind me a new cam to insure everything would be correct and then overnight it to me. Received that cam 8:30 AM Wednesday 4/12. Everything looked good :). Yea I know that these problems should not have occurred in the first place but I couldn't have asked for it to be handled any better :usa: Now I just need to complete the rest of the H/C install. :eyes:

Sorry about the problem, but sounds like there is plenty of customer support from all sides.

GTA91 Apr 13, 2006 10:01 PM

Glad they got it all resolved!!

Riddlerls1 Apr 13, 2006 10:14 PM

that sucks you had to wait but it def sounds like they are giving you great customer service.

eallanboggs Apr 14, 2006 06:48 AM

Did you happen to put these cam side by side with the new one to see where it is different? One of the steps or bosses has to be slightly out of spec, but with things like this is doesn't take much.
