Default Stroker motors

O.K. I'm new to the stroker motor world so I have a couple of questions. My first is my goals are to build the drivetrain first. (tranny, rear, driveshaft) Then after that I want to go with a forged motor. I was looking at longblocks from LS1speed.com. And I saw that they have a 408ci longblock which comes with a choice of heads. ( i would go with AFR's) Or there is a 348 block with the same options avaliable. ( heads, cam) I ws wondering if I went with the 408 block and did AFR 225's with say a .600 cam and I did the same options but with a 348ci, what would be the gain in Horsepower? My goal is to go high or mid 10's on motor and 9's on spray. So Should I be looking at the 408 block? Or could I get high to mid 10's on just motor with a 348 block? Im going to go with a longblock so I dont want to go with a shortblock at all. Thanks for the help in advance.

Mid to hi 10's with the 348 block is definitely do-able. But, I didn't see what kind/size heads & cam come with the 348. Lift isn't everything....duration is every bit as important, if not more so. Yeah, a .600 lift opens the valves a long way, but for how long? Duration has a huge impact on intake/exhaust flow. What about the intake/throttle body? The LS6 intake is about as good as it gets, as far as OEM intakes go, but if you're going with a forged engine, high-flowing heads (both the 205 & 225 AFR Mongoose heads flow like a mother), and a cam with some rumpety-rump, you may want to consider a FAST 90mm intake/throttle body.

Will you be using your OEM PCM? If so, get a GOOD tune, or all of those parts won't perform up to their full potential. And if you're going to be laying down that kind of power, and you plan on up-grading your A4, it's going to cost you. There are many sources for good, hi-quality 4L60e transmissions that'll take 600+ HP, but from what I've seen, plan on spending between 2 to 3 large for a good one. If you cheap out on a 4L60e in a hi-performance application, it isn't going to last very long.

You could do it without the small shot, provided you had a well-matched heads/cam/intake set-up, a good tune, and you knew how to drive. I was just saying that he didn't have to go to the 408 to hit 10's.

I agree, 10's is do-able with either combo your looking at, it's just the 408 has more room to play with in the future. A lot of guys run the 408's because they're iron, which will hold more pressure from nitrous or boost, and you get more cubes. If your planning on spending enough money to redo the whole powertrain, then I'd invest a bit more and get a nice 402 or 408. Of course it's going to be easier to get power out of a 408 but you can put down some nice numbers if you decide to go 348 also. Bichin is right on the cam too, look at all of the specs on the cam, lift, duration, lsa, all play a big factor in how your engine will run. I personally favor AFR's but a lot of the heads out there flow really well.
