Default Checking P to V with clay questions

This may be a silly quetion, but when checking p to v using the clay method, can I do it without using the head gasket and then just add the thickness of the gasket onto the thickness of the clay?

Also, what type of clay should I use?

Thanks!

You have to use some sort of head gasket. If you don't, the piston will hit the quench area because the pistons at TDC sticks out the bore (.008" I think) and you won't be able to turn the motor over. Don't use kids type of play-doh or whatever it's called, it's to sticky. Go to a hobby shop and buy some modeling clay.

So I guess I need to use my Cometics then. Good thing they are reuseable.
