Well I will be changing them when I change the valve springs whether they are bad or not only thing is that it might be a month or so until I do the valve springs/cam swap though. So I am just alittle bit nervous about the oil burn that was never there before. I just dont want to keep driving the car hard if I am potentially damaging something serious.

NO NO NO!!! I Definately screwed up.

I would NOT worry too much.

If you have recently started consuming oil, then give it a second look.

If you dont burn any more oil than you always have, the relax.

When you do the cam swap, your spring kit will come with new seals anyway.

Sorry for the confusion. My typing = teh suxx0rs.

You can replace them for peice of mind if you want. As for why they went bad at only 40k miles? Well, you said you drive it once a week and it sits all winter. The sitting is what dry's them out.
