Help me pick some cam specs for a CAM NOOB. I am looking for a nice, choppy cam sound, not worried about smog (duh) and would like good useable powerband off the bottle as well. Thanks in Advance.

My specs:

2001 SS Camaro
T-56 w/ ram HD and billet FW
stock bottom end
AFR 205 cc heads
LS6 intake
pacesetters/ bullet on each
SUX2BU intake
PP TB
***plan to add a nice 150 wet shot/and appropiate fuel upgrades

3200 Race weight
4.10s in a 10 bolt for now (also would apperciate advice for gear ratio in my new 12 bolt)----yes I know I need this SOON!!!!

unless you're going to spray a lot, like over 200 i wouldnt worry about finding a "nitrous cam". Just pick one best for NA and it will perform just as well on the spray.

Now the question is what kind of powerband are you looking for, how do you drive the car, and how high would you like to rev it. With those answeres we will be able to help steer you to a cam that would fit what you want a lot easier.

Willing to flycut would be the next important question....lots of chop necessitates the need to make room for larger cams with additional overlap.

Important piece of informatin to provide these guys with...

Yea good call tony, you'll want to get your compression up to get the most out of a cam, and to do that your going to need to run a thinner gasket and/or mill the heads. Anything in the 230 range is going to get real close to do this and will need to flycut.

Flycutting isn't hard at all, i just did mine last weekend, its just a question if you want to or not.

Thanks guys. Again, I am a cam noobie, I'm not familiar with flycutting.

I have been asking around a lot and it does seem like the overall concensus is just pick a good cam.....and they all will be fine with nitrous.

Powerband: I do want a large topend gain.....but I have had a few friends who have installed large cams and their bottom ends BLOWS.....like, really blows. I have an M6, and my M6 buddies with big cams seem to always bog off of the line, no matter how high they launch (5000+).

RPMS: Like mentioned, I have a set of AFRs 205s coming off a car at a local junkyard. I'm not sure what they are safe to REV to but I'm thinking I'd like to pull to the 6500 range.

Driving: I would consider myself an EXCELLENT M6 driver. Not just your average good driver....but very experienced and would put myself up to row with the best of them. My car is a daily driver, and sees the track (and back roads) every couple weeks in the "season".

Any more questions?

Give Bobby at LG Motorsports a call 1-972-429-1963 or better yet ask Tony Mamo since he's watching this thread. Good luck.

There is definitely something to be gained by camming the car right for exactly what you want to do.

We put the AFR 225s on a setup and it lost 40 hp... cam change away and it picked 30 or so of that right back up.

Was a 70 hp difference on the AFRs right cam vs wrong cam on the nitrous. 200 shot, not that big of a hit
