Is it possible to change a piston without removing the motor from the car?

Is it possible to change a piston without removing the motor from the car? Is it possible to remove the oil pan without pulling the motor? If so what has to be done? I broke a ringlands on one cylinder and I don’t want to pull the motor if I don’t have to.

Re: Is it possible to change a piston without removing the motor from the car? dealing with the frustration of having the motor in the car will be a PITA. Pulling the motor is relatively easy on these cars <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />
PUll the intake and it'll come from the top <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />
Besides if its one of the back pistons...it'll probably be a bear to do.

Re: Is it possible to change a piston without removing the motor from the car? Sounds like something that should also get associated parts/areas well inspected.I wouldn't want to half-@ss it & take the chance.

Re: Is it possible to change a piston without removing the motor from the car? Well, I did a compression check last night and now I am not sure if it is a ringlands because it ranged from 185 to 190 for all the cylinders. Any suggestions?

Re: Is it possible to change a piston without removing the motor from the car? The symptoms are very small amount of smoke like a smokestacks puffing out the oil filler hole. Condensation under the oil cap.

Re: Is it possible to change a piston without removing the motor from the car? No, you want the valves to be closed when you do this. Just pull the valve covers so you can see the valves are closed.

Re: Is it possible to change a piston without removing the motor from the car? with an air compressor and leakdown gage...you supply a constant pressure and the gage measures how much air is leaking from the combustion chamber. If significant air is leaking...listen to where it is coming from.
Bubbles in coolant = blown headgasket
air in the crankcase = bad rings
air in the intake = burnt intake valve
air in the exhuast = burnt exhaust valve
etc
