Final word on rocker bolt sealant?

RTV Sealant or Teflon Tape?

I have seen this issue over and over again.
I use Permatex Thread Sealant and that Did Not work.
I am not sure what is the best.

I used Blue Thread Locker. Anyone have problems going that route?

i used the peramtex thread sealant and it worked fine. dont use tape, thats for houses. the key to permatex is having everything clean and dry. i have also used blue thread locker on a customers car. both are working fine. i wouldnt use rtv on soemthing like this ever

I've used RTV on every car we have done and its hit and miss. My car has 500 miles with a crankcase vac system and I still have oil in the intake ports. How do you get oil in the intake ports if you have a crankcase evac system??

I used Red threadlocker, per the Crane stud installation instructions. No problems. A friend used the high temp Permatex thread sealant (looks like liquid teflon), not sure how he made out.

RTV in that area will just turn into a nasty gel-like substance.. it wont seal properly, and if its there long enough, it oozes out and into the engine.

its not made for that use anyway.



there are literally 100s of thread sealers out there that work just fine.. rather then just name my favorate one and have someone disagree, i thought id just mention that RTV is a bad idea, and you should persue other solutions.

my prefered one is Permatex thread sealent with Teflon... but there are others out there that work just as well

What about GMs liquid thread sealant that comes in a tube? They recommend it for the oil and coolant plugs on the block.

its suspiciouly identical to permatex teflon thread sealant....

I used some gray permatex stuff. It is a sealant/low strength thread locker. Figured it was perfect for the job. Working great so far.

I used black RTV and have absolutely no issues.... Its not like RTV doesnt contact oil when you use it to seal the timing cover etc... In fact I used to completely leave out the POS front and rear intake pieces on old SBCs after reading a Hot Rod article claiming it eliminated an issue with this area prone to oil leaks. It worked great.

I guess you like pulling threads out when you remove rockers. Thats a real hit and miss. So far I have used blue thread sealer and its hard to say how well it works with the PCV system dirtying everything up. With this next engine I am trashing the PCV, so I will know better then.

With the red threadlocker, you have to heat it to then pull the Crane studs. With a torch.

Ask me how I know.....

Anyway, I used permatex teflon 3K miles ago and it's fine, no oil loss. Make sure all parts are clean.

Actually, when I pulled them last time the studs backed out before the nut would break loose. I also have a Snap On stud puller that works great

I used black RTV on my motor this last time and after 500 miles I am getting oil in the intake runners. The only place it cancome from is the rocker bolt.

Low strength locker here, 10 months - 4800 miles and it's holding up fine.

ARP thread sealer with teflon seals everything for me. I'm sure it's similar to the Permatex, but I've never tried that out. I like the ARP because it is one of their recomended torquing agents.
