Tips for valve cover and intake port gaskets..

Tips for valve cover and intake port gaskets.. It seems like every time we take the valve covers or intake off we end up fighting with the gaskets to keep them seated. Anyone have any tips for keeping the gaskets in place? They stretch and just don't want to go back into place, we usually end up having to buy new gaskets.
When they stretch, I cut out a small portion at the top of the valve cover and put a dab of RTV where the two ends meet. It's worked for a few years now.
