Any recent changes to the motor? Have you over-revved the car lately?

I'm pretty sure the only way to know for sure is to take out the lifters and look at them. You'll see the plunger that the PR goes into is depressed down and won't go back up. I guess you could set up a dial indicator to check the travel height of the push rods to see the range of travel. That'd be a pain though.

Like above, did you just do something recent that would cause engine damage?

What oil are you running?

If you're trying to run a lightweight oil with an aggressive cam profile, the lifters will be fine at Idle, but they'll start to go soft as the rpm's go up. That will give you a ticking noise that increases with engine rpm.

was using 20w-50 non synthetic. figured that was the problem. So changed oil back to 10w-30 synthetic oil. Was stock but did all mods listed. ran fine and no noise but came on with a slow tick while running, shut off then restarted and it seemed to have gotten louder. had limiter set at about 6200 when this started.

and on the crush header gaskets, thats what i have on the car so hope that aint the problem. how would not having them be a problem. are we talking along the lines of an exhaust leak. aand another one, i dont think it would be a bearing cause theres hardly any noise if any at idle or during startup. correct me if i am wrong. thanks for the advice already though.

ok, removed all rockers and pushrods. cylinder 8 had a lifter that had came apart as far as i can tell. removed pushrod and noticed two worn spots where it is inserted in to the lifter. about 1/2 an inch from base of the pushrod and another about 1/2 an inch the first worn spot. tried to reinstall pushrod and it would not seat in the lifter. pushrod sticks out about two inches further than before i removed. anyone ever heard of a new comp magnum lifter coming apart that soon at only around 6,000 rpm. when replacing these any tips on what i need to do if that is the problem and what type to replace them with. any info would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

I've heard of lifters coming apart in the first 1000 miles, could've just been defective. Over-revving can cause that, but I'm willing to bet it was just junk from the factory. Replace with the same parts as the rest of the motor, don't bastardize it like some do. I'm glad you got it apart and at least found something wrong, that would irritate me silly. I'm not really clear on what you mean by it sticks out about 2" further than before you removed it.

what i meant by that was..... when i removed it, it was the same length out of the bore as most of the rest of the pushrods. when i reinstalled its like what ever was wearing the places on the side of the pushrod had fallen on the top of the lifter preventing the pushrod from seating correctly. sorry, trying to explain as good as i can. you kinda see what i mean.

Oh yeah... shoot... can you see if you put a flashlight down there? Something is seriously wrong if it's doing that... I wonder if the plunger came up with the spring, if the clip that holds the plunger into the body of the lifter broke/came loose it could do that. Can you push down on the top of the lifter with the pushrod and is it solid or spongey?

its solid, but i can move that end of the pushrod around in the bore and you can feel something move but when you push down it doesnt move.

Get a pen magnet and see if you can retrieve anything that may have fallen down there. **** man sounds like you have more serious problems than i had assumed.

i figured it may be the plunger that had come out and was hung up between the pushrod and lifter tray which explains the two worn spots on the side of the pushrod. and when i removed the pushrod it had fallen back ontop of the lifter preventing the the pushrod from being installed correctly. so what possible problems could occur from this besides the lifter having to be replaced.
