Default ls 1 vs traditional small block?

U sing strictly heads as a comparison iniatially(can expand on total package later) why is it that the ls1 heads are capable of hitting the 320 plus range in peak air flow where as the "traditional small block head iirc might just barely get to 300 maybe a tad over? My first guess would be being an 18 deg. head.. are there any other reasons along the technology line of think or otherwise for that matter that the traditional one seems to max out at least from what most of the aftermarket head manufactures seem to be putting out. While on the subject assuming a stock ls1 motor and free range of head choice when is there a point to too much head flow keeping port size to factory specs?

ls1 heads are 15 degrees...all the way to 11 degrees for the ls7 heads. They have symetrical ports so each cylinder can be filled more evenly and the ports themselves are larger in volume than most small block heads. In my opinion those are some of the main reasons for the flow/hp differences. The fact that the engines are sequentially port injected helps also as do the large throttle bodies the engines breath thru and the computor control makes the engine respond over a wide rpm range.

Not to mention the shape of the intake port inlets. They are much taller than any SBC head I've ever seen, similar to the Vortec heads, but much more drastic.

thanks for the reply... so ls1s being symetrical is the main reason for such typically high flowing heads than the earlier generation?

I guess you've never looked at an LS1 head compared to a SBC? It's a night and day difference.
