One last issue
When you say nothing, you mean the motor spins with no compression?
If thats the case your timing chain is off or you have too much preload, or the base circle of your cam is different than stock.
Try backing your rocker arms out a bit where they are just loose and see if when you crank it over you get compression but dont start it.

sounds like stated above that MAYBE the crank and timing gear are not aligned right.
But as you stated, you hate to go in there and find out it is not.
Have you doubled check everything else? And the dot to dot is the last thing.

Saw your other thread, your preload is fine but you probably didn't get the zero lash condition correct. A lot of people make this mistake, how did you get to zero lash? According to my calcs, you have 0.080" preload on your lifters so you are fine. The question, 0.080 from zero lash or some other preload.
