Engine tick noise, normal or not? *VIDEO* Well I have been away from the world of the LS1 for quite some time, and can't remember what they sounded like. I know the injector ticking is normal, and some valvetrain noise can be as well. But I am hearing a ticking noise coming from somewhere. My friend used a screwdriver and listened, and said it "sounds" like it is a lifter. Thats what I think, just wanted to know what you guys thought.
On a wierd note, when I parked the car today, I heard that same noise not in the eninge bay persay, but actually underneath the car by the header area.

Your noise is exactly what I have in my 98 F body. I have chased it around and around. My first thought was a lifter - so I replaced them with GMPP LS7 lifters and new baskets. This did not produce a change. Are you running larger ratio rockers? I did the Harland Sharp 1.8's with a .050 shorter pushrod and noticed slight interference between the pushrods and the clearance holes in the heads. I sent the heads back to Gunner at PP and he ground some clearance for me. Still have the noise.
I've talked to several LS owners and they claim that when you're running headers, large lift (~0.600), and high pressure springs (350# @ open), that you get some noise. I would think that they would all be noisy - Anyway, you're not the only one. My plan is to run it till it becomes a problem - it either goes away or I can't hear it above 4000. When I get some time I might recheck the pushrod length.

You guys need to use a "poor mans'" stethoscope. Get a section of 3/8" rubber hose a couple of feet long, stick one end in your ear and move the other end around the engine while it's running. This way you can pinpoint where the noise is coming from and evaluate what needs to be done.
im at work and cant listen to it, but i have an abnoxious tick while driving, im thinking its the headers or the lifters...like someone said, im just going to drive it untill it becomes a problem, and i drve almost 30,000 miles a years so taht may be real soon

It is still under warranty, so I think I am going to take it in.

I have the exact same noise in my 99 Z28. Mods are COMP xr269 cam,flowtech headers, new gmpp lifters, gm mls head gaskets ,COMP 918 valve springs, ORY-pipe, cold air lid. The noise is there whether the engine is cold or hot & it seems to be mostly at lower RPM. So far I have about 18K miles since the noise started & no problems yet, but it's very annoying.
my car does that, started after i cammed it...although it may hve done it before and i was just listening for noises after the cam....its quite annoying though, '01 ws6 with 52k miles

That is piston slap. That is why GM put a coating on the skirts of the pistons from (I think) 2001 on up. GM says it will cause no damage to you enginge. The reason it usually goes away when the enging heats up is because the pistons expanded with the heat.
The only thing that will fix it is a total rebuild with new pistons.

Mine does it occasionally - most noticable when sitting in line at a drive-thru close to the building. Only happened after the LTs went on, so I'm going with the theory of thinner walls + more air volume allows more valvetrain noise. Mine isn't quite as pronounced under the hood, but it sounds the exact same as in the first video, in the driver's front wheelwell and right underneath the driver door.
i have it too... sounds like an exhaust leak to me coming from my header, iv been told its a normal sound, and i cant find a leak anywhere.... i also have piston slap when cold...
