Question Vertical Scratch in 2 cylinders, why?

What would cause a vertical scratch in a cylinder that you can feel with your finger nail on a forged rebuilt LSx engine? Rings?

Usualy, yes
Could be unseated rings or ring filing on gap edges was not correct.
Otherwise some other debris.

So basically it wasn't built right, if you know nothing got into the engine.

Would this happen over time or right away?

Car got tuned on a dyno when it had over 500-600 miles on it and made great power, 3,000+ miles later, power seemed/felt down. Did a compression check and leak down, found that 2 cylinders were way low. Pulled heads off and found a scratch that you can feel in the cylinders that had low compression and leak down on those same cylinders.

Are you sure the sleeve isn't cracked. That sucks either way.

Sorry to hear that.
Happened to me as well, on a motor that was built last August. The thing that sucks is that you probably can't bore it out anymore, meaning you have to have it resleaved, or a new block. I just saw it as a chance to uprgraded to a 402.

Damn that sucks. Sounds like a build problem to me....incorrect ring clearance or simply the wrong rings.

Not my car a friends....

What about if the ring gap wasn't set right, too small? Once it got up to temp and drove it hard, would the rings expand to the point where they would touch at the gap, bow out and scratch the walls?

for the first 5-600 miles did the car run very rich? too much gas in the cylinders can wash the oil off the cylinders and eat your rings/cylinders fast. but i dont know about one single scratch....
